Choosing the right LandyCamper

  • Which vehicle should I choose: Waffle (Defender 90) or Fern (Defender 110)?

Waffle is perfect for couples, or solo campers. Fern is perfect for families, friends who don’t want to share a tent, or those going on longer adventures.

  • How many people can each vehicle sleep?

Waffle seats and sleeps up to two people (2 seats, one rooftop tent), Fern seats and sleeps up to 5 (5 seats, two rooftop tents). Extra sleeping space in the tent annexe, or by adding the Thule Outset add-on.

  • Is Fern suitable for families?

Yes, absolutely!

  • Is Waffle best for couples?

She’s perfect for couples, but if you’re planning a long trip, Fern has more room in the middle seat row for luggage.

  • Are the vehicles dog-friendly?

Fern the 110 is, with the Dog Pack add-on.

  • Can we hire both vehicles for a group trip?

Yes, contact us directly for a bulk rate offer!

  • Do you offer one-way hires?

No, hires must start and end at our HQ.

What’s included with a hire?

  • What’s included in the hire price?

The hire price includes the vehicle, rooftent(s), all camping gear, and one named driver.

  • Are there any add-on charges for essential camping gear?

No! Everything is included in the standard rate.

  • Do you provide bedding / sleeping bags / pillows?

Yes, bedding, sleeping bags and pillows are already packed for you!

  • Do you provide cooking equipment and utensils?

Yes, we provide a gas stove (and gas), pots, pans, utensils, cutlery, crockery – everything but the ingredients.

  • Is a fridge included?

Yes, a compressor fridge (like you have at home) is included.

  • Do you provide chairs/table?

Yes, chairs for every guest and tables are included as standard.

  • Do you provide lighting and power solutions?

Yes, battery, solar panels, torches, head torches and lanterns are included.

  • Is heating included / is this suitable for colder months?

Heating isn’t included, but we provide season-suitable bedding, and thermal liners for the tens in colder months (which really hold the warmth in – and with none of the risks of a diesel heater!)

  • What do we need to bring ourselves?

Food, clothes, and a sense of adventure!

Pricing, deposits, and mileage

  • How much does it cost to hire Waffle?

Waffle is available from £199/night

  • How much does it cost to hire Fern?

Fern is available from £235/night

  • What affects the price?

We have three booking ‘seasons’, bookings are charged on a nightly basis, with discounts for longer stays.

  • Is there a discount for longer hires?

Yes, 10% off 7+ nights, 15% off 14+ nights, and for 30+ nights contact us directly for a custom offer.

  • What deposit is required to book?

A 25% deposit is required to secure dates, with the balance being due no later than 31 days prior to hire.

  • What is the security deposit and how is it taken?

Security deposit is £750, taken at pickup.

  • What mileage is included per day?

125 miles are included per day (average over the hire.

  • What happens if we exceed included mileage?

Extra miles are charged at a small fee to cover wear and tear.

Booking rules and requirements

  • What’s the minimum hire period?

3 nights.

  • Can I start/end on any day of the week?

Yes, as long as the vehicle is available, we are flexible.

  • What are the pickup and drop-off times?

Guaranteed pick up is from midday, drop off by 3pm. However, we can generally be flexible on this, depending on availability – please enquire on booking.

  • What do I need to bring for pickup?

Please ensure you have: All drivers' photo-card driving licences, passports and proof of address. The proof of address must be in the form of a bank statement, utility bill or letter from a Government Department dated not more than 90 days previously.

A debit or credit card in the name of the main driver to lodge the Security Deposit of £750.00 with us.

  • Who can drive?

Driver's must be between 25 and 70 years old and have held a full and clean driving licence for at least 3 years. Please get in touch before booking if you do not fulfil these requirements and we will talk to our insurers.

  • How many drivers are included?

One driver is included.

  • Can I add an additional driver and what’s required?

Additional drivers can be added at £10/night. They must conform to the Driver Requirements.

  • Can I take the vehicle off-road?

No, off-roading is not covered under the insurance policy and is not permitted.

  • Can I take it to festivals?

Generally yes, but please contact us before booking to confirm.

  • What is your cancellation policy?

If you wish to cancel the booking you may do so at any time by contacting us by e-mail or telephone. We will confirm the cancellation in writing to you. The cancellation will take effect on the day we receive it. Upon receipt of notice of your cancellation or termination, the following shall apply:

•       If cancelled 90 days or more prior to the start of the Hire Period: the booking deposit will be refunded in full to you.

•       If cancelled 89 to 28 days prior to the start of the Hire Period: you will not be entitled to a return of the booking deposit which shall act as our cancellation fee.

•       If cancelled less than 28 days prior to the start of the Hire Period: you will not be entitled to a refund of the Hire Charge paid.

Insurance and breakdown support

  • Is insurance included?

Yes. The hire charge includes comprehensive motor insurance for the hire period, for the named driver(s) confirmed on your booking.

  • What does the insurance cover / excess?

Your hire includes comprehensive motor insurance, but you are responsible for a £1,000 damage excess per incident, regardless of who is at fault. This excess is only refundable if we successfully recover the cost from a third party (which can take months or longer).

  • What happens if we break down?

Your hire includes roadside assistance cover during the hire period. If the vehicle cannot be recovered or is unsafe to drive the same day, the breakdown provider may be able to assist (details are provided in the LandyCampers Handbook / AA booklet supplied with the vehicle).

  • Is breakdown assistance included?

Yes - roadside assistance / breakdown cover is included during the hire period.

  • What happens if we damage the vehicle?

If there’s an accident or damage, you must notify the police and follow the instructions in the LandyCampers Handbook. A replacement vehicle is not guaranteed and depends on availability, location, and how long remains in your trip. We do not cover other knock-on costs (e.g., accommodation, flights, missed plans), so we always recommend you take out your own travel insurance.

  • What happens if the tent/equipment is damaged?

Any damage to the vehicle or equipment (including the tent and camping kit) must be reported and will be assessed after return. Costs may be deducted from (or charged beyond) the security deposit where they fall outside insurance cover, or where terms have been breached. We’ll provide reasonable documentary evidence for any costs charged.

Pickup, parking, and logistics

  • Where exactly is pickup (how close to Stansted)?

Pickup is from our HQ in Wimbish, close to Saffron Walder. This is 18 minutes from Stansted Airport.

  • Can I leave my car with you during the trip?

Yes, we have secure off-road parking, though this is done at the hirers risk.

  • Is the vehicle manual or automatic?

Manual.

  • Is there Bluetooth / phone charging?

Yes, the Landys have Bluetooth, as well as Android Auto/Apple Carplay compatible displays, and multiple USB charge points.

Sustainability

  • Is LandyCampers carbon neutral / climate positive and what does that mean?

Yes, we are climate positive – all hires include a Carbon Offset and Tree Planting to cover more than their calculated CO2 output. To date we have offset more than the entire lifetime emissions of our vehicles (not just under our ownership, but since manufacture), and operate a ‘Climate Positive’ business – in short, your adventure has a positive impact on the planet!

Gifts

  • Do you sell gift vouchers?

Yes, we sell gift vouchers for part of, or full, hires. Standard values can be purchased directly though our web shop, or please contact us for custom values.

  • Do vouchers expire?

Vouchers are valid for 12 months from purchase.

  • Can vouchers be used for anything (hires + shop)?

Yes, either towards hires, or products on our web store.

  • Can you issue a printable voucher / PDF?

Yes, we can issue either, or both, at no extra cost.
