Before you collect the keys... How we prepare your Defender camper before every hire
There is a moment at the start of a handover that I always look forward to.
Guests arrive and see their Landy waiting with the rooftop tent open, the awning out and the camping setup ready to explore. Often, it is their first time seeing a LandyCamper in person. Before you collect the keys... How we prepare your Defender camper before every hireWatching their faces as they take it all in is still one of my favourite parts of running the business.
By then, we have usually spent the best part of a day preparing the vehicle and its equipment.
Here is what happens before you arrive, and how we help you feel at home with everything before you set off.

Everything comes out, whether it has been used or not
Each turnaround starts by taking all the equipment out of the Landy.
Even if something appears untouched, it comes out for a thorough clean and inspection. Emptying the vehicle lets us work through the whole setup properly, including the storage areas that keep everything organised.
We clean the Landy inside and out, check the condition of the vehicle and its equipment, and repair or replace anything that needs attention. Our preparation process runs through all the 'pre-flight' checks you'd want before taking out a hire vehicle. We know every hire goes out in top condition.
Fresh bedding and a thoroughly cleaned tent
We open the rooftop tent, remove the bedding, and vacuum and clean the interior. Bedding and mattress covers are laundered between every hire.
Whether you have spent the day walking along the coast or taking the scenic route to your next campsite, we want you to climb into a tent that feels clean, fresh and ready for your holiday.
Storage shaped by living in our own Land Rover
The way we pack the Landys comes from travelling and living out of our own Land Rover for months on end on the road.
We learnt quite quickly that the thing you needed on arrival would somehow always end up at the bottom of the pile. Getting to it meant moving boxes, shifting bags and unpacking far more than you wanted to.
It gets old surprisingly quickly when that is your everyday routine.
That experience helped shape the custom-built storage unit we developed for LandyCampers. Everything has a proper place, with the equipment arranged so you can reach what you need without rummaging through a vehicle full of loose kit.
It makes a difference each time you stop: finding something to cook with, reaching the fridge or getting your camp set up. A little thought at the packing stage saves a lot of unnecessary unpacking later.
Getting familiar before you leave
Seeing the whole setup when you arrive gives you a chance to explore how the space works and picture your own campsite that evening. The fridge is already cold, ready for your first provisions.
A typical handover takes around 45 minutes to an hour. We show you where to find the equipment, how it works and how to put it away again, with time for questions along the way.
Then we go through the tent. Starting with it open, I demonstrate how to fold and close it, open it again and show you the full setup. We then close and pack it down together, ready for you to leave.
That last part matters. Watching someone do something and having a go yourself are different experiences. Working through it together gives you a chance to get a feel for it and ask questions while I am there beside you.
Getting comfortable with the Defender
The driving handover is tailored to your experience. Everyone gets a safety briefing and an introduction to the details of our setup. If you have never driven a Defender, we spend more time talking you through the vehicle and its controls.
We also show you the handbook, where to find the information you might need during your trip and how to contact us.
You are welcome to get in touch if a question comes up while you are away. You will be speaking to the people who prepare the Landys and know the equipment.

Ready for your first evening away
Before you leave, we can talk through your route and share campsite or stop-off suggestions.
For guests heading out without food already packed, we often point them towards our local butcher and farm shop, just a few minutes down the road. You can pick up something for the first evening and breakfast, put it straight into the fridge and carry on with your trip.
Since starting LandyCampers in 2019, Bela and I have kept refining the experience around the things we would want as guests ourselves. The preparation, packing and handover all come from that same question: what would make this holiday work better for the people travelling next?
If you are planning your own Defender camping holiday, check our dates and availability, or send us your preferred month, roughly how many nights you have in mind and who is coming. We will help you take it from there.
